House of Cotton
by Monica Brashears
That was weird.. The premise was weird, the development was weird, the characters were soooo weird.. I'm actually not very sure of how all the elements of the story tied together but it was interesting. Although it had some paranormal/gothic tone, the book deals more with what it means to be an young Black woman in the south and which roles or archetypes patriarchal society try to mold women into.
There were a lot of loose ends with the plot and the ending was a bit of a let down in the simplicity after all the emotionally charged events of the last chapters. You could feel all the depth of the characters but the story fell a bit flat to how much complexity it could have had
