The Girl with No Shadow by Joanne Harris
4.0
I loved "Chocolat" and was excited to find a sequel. What was interesting about this particular story is that it doesn't just pick up where the first book left off and try to continue the story. It's a brand new story. Brand new plot. We still have Vianne, Anouk, and Roux from the first novel, but it's a new setting, new supporting characters, and a new main character (Zozie) who we can't tell if we're supposed to love her or hate her for most of the novel. I loved seeing the relationship between Vianne and Anouk as they have taken on the names of Yanne and Annie. I loved that we got to see their relationship from Vianne's POV, from Anouk's POV, and from an outsider's POV. That mother-daughter relationship as the daughter enters her tween years is really a fragile and important thing, and it was interesting to watch.
While the whole story wasn't as beautiful and lovely as "Chocolat" was, I still found it enjoyable and interesting. I need to read more Joanne Harris!
