Wow. This book.
In the beginning, I was infatuated with Rin's character. The studying for the Keju, the sheer strenght of not wanting the life the Fangs had drawn up for her. Then I became thoroughly irritated by her. All the choices she made, the childish behavior, the impatience. And then, I became utterly fascinated by the way she was written. She felt so tangible as a character. Her fast-growing hunger for power. Her egocentrical view of the world.
The last conversation with
Kitay
in the book and her reaction to it.
'How dare he? How dare he stand there like this and accuse her of atrocities? [...] She had achieved revenge for her people. She had saved the Empire. Kitay would not judge her for it. She wouldn't let him.'
Gods, that just sends shivers down my spine.

I had just one moment in the book where I didn't feel the need to pick this book up and read it, and that was right in the middle. Like two or three chapters of slog for me. I can see how the things in it were important for the book, but it went by so slow. That being said. Part III of this book just compensates for any boredom I had ever felt while reading this book. I think it's very well written, the mythology adds to it nicely, and just the gruesome scenes of how war can be... I am left speechless. I cannot give this book less than 5 stars.
