Anna K: A Love Story by Jenny Lee

4.5

I’ve never read Anna Karenina, so this story was totally new to me. It was delightful. The characters were deeply flawed, yet likeable. The writing was charming from the first page. It seamlessly blends the classic with the modern.

One thing I struggled with, though, was feeling separate from the characters. The perspective that it’s written in keeps the reader at arm’s length— I really questioned if I would like the story more if it had been written in first person, or would that have detracted from the charm of the writing style? I wanted to crawl inside the characters’ heads and live there for a while to truly understand them better.
