roklobster 's review for:
Packing for Mars
by Mary Roach
This is sort of a layman's introduction to all the ins and outs of space travel, from what it really took to put someone on the moon to how they didn't get to bathe while going there.
Very well written and presented in a great way. However? Not a lot about the actual plans for going to Mars. But I do have more of an appreciation now for both the technological problems as well as the psychological issues that might come up.
In the last chapter tho, she says what I feel in my gut:
"Simulation is becoming reality. But it's not anything like reality. ... Ask an astronaut whether taking part in a space simulation is anything like being in space. What's different? Sweat, risk, uncertainty, inconvenience. But also awe. Pride. Something ineffibly splendid and stirring. ..."
There are great gains to be made by sending a person to Mars, I think. So I agree with Mary. "Let's squander some [money] on Mars. Let's go out and play."
Yes please.
