The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

5.0

there are books that give you a warm feeling when you finish them and then there are books that you feel like you’re missing before you’ve even set them down after reading the last word.

this book and story is haunting. the characters are haunting. everything about it hits you straight in the heart and keeps the punches coming. I don’t think i’ve read a book that left me that hollow after it was finished. not in a bad way though, more of a “I wish I could read this again for the first time” kind of way. It’s a gorgeous book about the decency of humans in a time where that didn’t seem possible. it was heartbreaking, but reassuring in a sad but hopeful way.
