The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo

An intriguing story with a somewhat satisfying ending. The exploration into the interpretation of afterlife and the troubles that the MC Li Lan encounters were fascinating, and the cultural and historical setting was very immersive.

This is the second book I've read from this author, and I've noticed a common thread of mystery, but it isn't treated like a equation to be solved. I thought more development would go into the deceased Tian Ching and his storyline, or even the behind the scenes machinations of the underworld officials, but there wasn't much of that. There's more focus on the individual journey, and the choices they make.

I enjoyed Li Lan's family and their dynamics, even though there are flaws and deep-seated regrets, you can see the care a lot for one another. I also very much enjoyed her antics with Er Lang. The confrontations between the two honestly made me laugh out loud. I wished there was more of him at the end but it is what it is.
