This was a looong book. I'm usually very anti 'books about writers' but I think Paul Auster is my exception to that rule. Even with a some of his novels kind of working on some kind of 'writers exercise' (1st/2nd/3rd person sections on the last on I think I read) he does it extremely well.

There are parts of 4321 that use the trick of the alternate lives of one character very well, and I'm glad it wasn't just 1 event that caused a branch, but more of a general 'different way of things unfolding' in his life. Not all characters are in all lives, and the relationship similarities and differences between the lives are dealt with interestingly.
