Codex Born by Jim C. Hines

I think the Patrick Rothfuss quote on the back of the book says it best. "The third thing I thought was, ‘I should have gone to sleep three hours ago." I may or may not have stayed up until 2:30am last night finishing this book. As my friend said, "All the feels."

This book builds upon the foundation set in Libriomancer, expanding the world and the characters. I particularly loved the growth of Lena Greenwood, a dryad nymph who exists only to please her lover. Due to events in the last book, she now has two lovers and is experiencing a degree of freedom due to the interplay between them. I appreciated the nod to Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land for a surface-level look at polyamorous relationships. As we learn more about Lena's past, we gain insight into her present and her future. I loved her journey throughout the story.

For the main arc, we have a villain bent on revenge against the Porters and Johannes Gutenberg. In enacting this revenge, he has deadly plans for our heroes and those who live near them - towns matter not to him. We also learn of other magical groups and what repercussions they may have for the Porters. The larger plot clearly sets things up for the next book in the series, but I enjoyed the way it all played out.

As I said about the first book: if you love reading, and you love science fiction and fantasy, you owe it to yourself to pick this book up and read.
