The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
2.0
slow-paced

Wow, this was not what I expected. And I don't say that in a good way.
This book got so much good attention since it came out and honestly, I don't get it.

This was for me a very mediocre mystery with a whole lot of family drama mixed in it. But not in a good way.

I love complex characters and I like to know where they come from. But even though we got a lot of backround for every single character, most of them still felt really flat.
I did like Barbara and Tracy and their realationship, also TJ wasn't so bad.
The investigator was also a character I didn't want to punch. Although did we really need her family story? I don't know, it didn't add to the book, being presented the story of a person that arrives halfway through the book.

But Louise? Meh. And Alice? OMG her chapters were so boring and so pathetic. The book would actually be a lot more interesting without her whole life story.
I get that we need some information, but I despised her chapters.

Aside from my issues with the characters, there were two big things I did not like about the writing style:

First, the multiple POVs. And not just that, but multiple timelines and skipping back and forth within those timelines. If cleverly executed, this might be interesting, but for me, it didn't feel thast way. But I have to add, I listened to the audio book, so maybe it would have been different with a physical copy.

Second, my biggest issue with this book: The endless cheap popcorn cliffhangers. After every chapter. After a while, I knew while listening, that the chapter would be over within the next 30 seconds, just because the story got interesting. It was SO irritating and really destroyed the flow of the book for me.

To say something positive: The ending was pretty good. It tied everything together nicely. If I would still have cared at this point, it would have been very nice. But unfortunately I did not.
