Arcane Carolinas: Folklore, Urban Legends, and Tales of Modern Weird from the Carolinas by Charlie Mewshaw

informative lighthearted medium-paced

3.5

Arcane Carolinas  has been one of my favorite podcasts since it launched in 2020. While true to its tagline to explore the "folklore, legends, and modern weird" of North and South Carolina, it is so much more than that might lead one to expect. The book, like the podcast, doesn't just present you with local legends as might be whispered around the campfire, but rather explores the history, possible explanations, and variations upon these myths.

Both believers and folks intrigued by the arcane for other reasons will find much to enjoy in this first collection of tales. One needn't be an existing fan of the podcast either. Curiosity about the strange and a fine appreciation of history are all the reader needs to delight in this book.
