I read this one after seeing it recc'ed on Reddit. Glad I did! :)
It is a slow-paced, character-driven book about nothing. The characters felt very authentic with all their flaws, and I find that Steinbeck's writing style and the themes he likes to stick to, both worked well for this story.

The story is a product of both its time (the 1940s), and Steinbeck's less than favourable attitude towards women. It is not always as obvious, but it may be a jolt to contemporary readers.
