An unforgettable book about love, and the many different forms it'll come in.
I can't say too much about the plot without spoiling every aspect of it, but just know that I love it all. The goodness and complexities that get tangled in Evelyn's story, Monique's character growth while taking her life into her own hands, the moral grey-ness of every character introduced. And of course, the in depth look into what fame is like. It's a beautiful life story that's amazingly written, and, on its own, this book is a must for everyone who enjoys a bit of drama.
In my eyes though, this book is incredibly important to me.
I feel seen through like glass. Evelyn Hugo is a painful main character who I feel deeply for on many levels. Her Latin American heritage, her sexuality, and outlook on life seem to scream at me from the pages, telling me to open my eyes to my own reality. Even if we are vastly different people, she is a character I feel connected to, and not simply because I just finished reading through her entire life story. Good representation is important for minorities, and Evelyn Herrera has got to be the best representation I've ever read. She's not the greatest person, but she's far from terrible, she's human and she makes that explicitly clear multiple times. Her struggles are some I've only ever experienced personally and have never seen written about. Reading this made me feel so much better about having these kinds of issues, because nobody really cares about them, but they are so real. Her story is a hope for me, as another LGBT Latina WOC.
So of course, by the end, I was sobbing. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
