My son got this book for his 10th birthday. He likes adventure books and I like fantasy, and since it’s a bit above his reading level, I knew it would make a perfect option for me to read to him.

I really liked this book. It took a lot of familiar elements and created a unique and engaging story that addresses some hard topics in a way that is meaningful to young children. There’s magic, mystical creatures, friendship, a dash of romance, adventure, and mystery…truly something for everyone. Parts of it could be dark and scary, but much of it is full of wonder and hope, and that pretty much sums up the message of this imaginative book. It’s a lot like the Harry Potter books in this way. No wizards and witches, but just the overall feelings evoked.

I do feel like it could have moved more quickly in parts, especially for young readers who might not have the best attention span. That said, my son really enjoyed the book as well and is eager for the next installment which comes out just in time for his next birthday!
