Hallowe'en Party
by Agatha Christie
It's time to get a little bit reflective as I'm nearing the end of my Christie journey. I had never read any Christie or even heard of Poirot until the end of 2023 when I watched Kenneth Branagh's A Haunting in Venice. I went into the movie not even knowing it was Christie or Poirot, it just looked spooky and had Michelle Yeoh in it (my only 2 prerequisites for a film).
Spoiler, I ended up loving it. And while the other Branagh Christie films are... definitely movies, this one was just so magical to me. The dark Venetian atmosphere, the tragic characters and their depths, Poirot's mastery, and of course Michelle Yeoh's masterful performance cracked the Christie shell for me and led me to take a chance on And Then There Were None on a random day in May.
This book wasn't a Christie standout and A Haunting in Venice is not a particularly faithful adaptation of Hallowe'en Party nor The Last Seance but it led me all the way here and for that I'm grateful. We'll get into the mushy stuff in my review of Curtain but I'll just say that I've enjoyed the ride so far and can't wait to see how it ends!
