The Queens of Animation was a fascinating, often infuriating look inside the Walt Disney Company, and how they treated the women who worked in the animation department.
There are so many inspiring stories in this book. The things these women endured to pursue their goals was incredible. The salary differences, the horrible treatment, the lack of acknowledgement in the credits...it was all enraging. Yet these women prevailed. As a big Disney fan, it was interesting to see the movies and parks that I have long loved through the lens of the contribution of women. I even teared up at the end when Holt described the current scene in Disney animation and how far things have come.
There was one thing about this book that bothered me a bit. It was told chronologically but sometimes the author would include vague statements about the future of the particular woman she was focusing on. Later that woman would pop up again as if that statement about the future hadn't happened. It was confusing and took me out of the story.
This book was a perfect addition to my Non-Fiction November. Though it's too late for many of them to see, I'm so glad these women are getting the credit they deserve.
