What power do the stories of our past carry?

Donna Barba Higuera proposes that the stories of our past carry the power to save us from ourselves. Pitted against a colorblind-utopian foe, Petra fights very plainly for the idea that being different is not bad, that recognizing our differences in fact informs our ability to give people what they need, and that storytelling, as it has been passed down for millennia, is our most powerful tool for preserving these unique identities. Being able to connect with our ancestors, while we look forward to the future, keeps us rooted, keeps us compassionate, keeps us human.

If you like the works of Darcie Little Badger, if you are drawn to stories about the power of stories, if you find yourself wanting to connect to a family long taken from you, this book is for you. It is quite possibly the best book I'll read this year.
