Alone with You in the Ether by Olivie Blake

4.0

Let's call it a low 4. I debated between a high 3 and a low 4, but I think it was a unique enough book in terms of the way it was written to go with the higher rating. By that I mean that Ms. Blake is clearly an intelligent author, which is necessary to create an incredibly smart character like Aldo, as well as an extremely detached and reckless character like Regan. I closed the book feeling like I knew the characters well, but I didn't have a connection with them, nor did I feel the urge to root for them at any point as individuals or as a couple.
The humor throughout the book kept it entertaining amidst the flowery prose type of writing. There were more than a handful of pages that included melodramatic paragraphs, but I was able to look past those for the most part. What I could NOT look past were the horribly cringey sex scenes, or any type of scene that included intimacy. I think Olivie Blake should stick to dark academia/fantasy after this one. However, there were numerous notable and relatable lines up until the very end, to the point where I felt simultaneously seen and attacked, and for that I greatly appreciate this book overall.
