Really sorry but can't give this a star rating.
I can only assume that the global covid-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for the author and this was either dusted off after being kept in a drawer for 20+years to meet a looming deadline or it has been ghostwritten by someone inexperienced and due to the author's previous output has gone straight to print without being seen by an editor.
The constant (from the first page) misogyny and fat-phobia exhibited in this book was shocking for 2021, let alone 2009 when this book is set.
It was very poorly written, clichéd one dimensional characters, also more of a saga about the goings on within the street than a murder investigation that was expected.
Adding to the misogyny, fat-phobia and constant descriptions of female characters looks and clothing (with additional negative assumptions about them) we had our white knight/saviour in Conrad who had superhuman physical abilities and detective skills that would put Sherlock Holmes to shame.
I read this as part of working on my (extensive) backlog on The Pigeonhole app, so had my fellow "pigeons" comments to get me through (and entertain). Many were fans of the author and they suggested that this was a (huge) blip for the author and we should read one of her (earlier) other books. I will try and do this next year, but would say "Suspects" is one to avoid, hoping the author can get back to their usual standard in future books.
With thanks to the Pigeonhole for the opportunity (and my fellow pigeons for their comments)
