gabiolami 's review for:
Persuasion
by Jane Austen
Okay, now I understand why all the Austen-heads were so frustrated with the Netflix adaptation of Persuasion...
Read if you enjoy:
✅ introvert core
✅ second-chance romance
✅ ridiculous side characters
This isn't my first step into Jane Austen's work. I read Emma back in high school and I didn't finish it lol. I think Emma just wasn't the right Austen heroine for me. I really like my characters to suffer and go through difficult trials before ultimately gaining their greatest happiness. Emma doesn't really have to suffer, she is beautiful and popular and everyone likes her. While Anne Elliot is surrounded by people who are self-serving and are happy to let her act as an audience member, rather than a true participant in her own life. (I think most introverts can empathize with this experience...)
Reading this book gave me a true appreciation for Jane Austen's writing and character/plot development. The writing is so clever and the story is well-paced. I felt like it gave a good look into the societal conventions that were common in Regency-era England.
Pro-tip: I read this while listening to an audiobook with a fantastic voice-over artist (Laura Sears via Spotify audiobooks) and having someone do quality voice acting and differentiating between characters helped so much with my overall reading experience.
