Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport
4.0
I found this book to be a really nice mix of social media critique and mindfulness exercises. What is particularly strong in this book is the author's coverage of meaningful leisure - namely, ways to pursue significant hobbies when your life isn't always full of aimless scrolling. I gave it four stars only because I found a few places where the author downplays the need for "downtime" or "time to do nothing" as not necessary in place of meaningful leisure, which I found to be a bit tone-deaf with regard to burnout.
I've been trying to find ways to keep myself from instinctively reaching for my phone during every spare minute of my day. While a page is loading, while I'm waiting for a meeting to start, when I check the weather and fall down an Instagram rabbit hole. I've started the "digital declutter" (which I'm grateful the author isn't calling a detox) for the month of February, and his practical guidelines have been a good basis for building the habit. I've cleared off all of the distraction apps, excluding a few for work and banking, so I'm ready to see where my head is at come the end of the month.
Highly recommended for those tired of losing time to meaningless social media, and who want to find more time in their days to pursue more meaningful activities (or get more work done)
