The eloquence of Roald Dahl is well demonstrated in this dark twist on classic fairy tales.
Revolting Rhymes is a great choice for parents as it covers the weird topics kids love without being too juvenile. Dahl has a distinct talent for creating art aimed at children, but with subtext that only adults would understand. As someone who is neither a fan of poetry or fairytale retellings, I still absolutely devoured this book.
I will mention that the evolution of language has had a fascinating impact on this writing; certain words used are definitely considered inappropriate for young readers in a modern context. When the handsome Prince asks about Cinderella, “Who’s this dirty slut?” , I couldn’t help chuckling.
I read this for a reading challenge prompt and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
