Lucky in Love by Kasie West
2.0

I bought Lucky in Love at a Scholastic Book Fair because Kayla from Books and Lala keeps talking about Kasie West. It then sat on my bookshelf for a year and a half, and I finally decided to pick it up for Contemporaryathon.

Lucky in Love takes place in Santa Ana/Tustin, California. The main character, Maddie, decides to buy her first lottery ticket on her 18th birthday – and wins! This is about Maddie making mistakes and learning how $30 million can impact your life.

The characters are bland, and unlikable. Maddie is judgemental and snippy, but also smart, witty, and quirky. Her friend Elise is all about fun, while her friend Blaire is all about getting into Stanford. Her brother, Beau, is a jerk. Her coworker, Seth, is an easy-going, risk-taking, kind Asian-American, and is my favourite character.

If Maddie is so smart why does she act so stupid? I feel like something her boss does without Maddie’s consent is completely inappropriate. Maddie’s parents are dysfunctional, selfish, and immature. I’m just so tired of adults being portrayed as morons in YA novels.

Lucky in Love is not for readers who like a complicated plot or well-written characters. This is a quick, fun book for reluctant-readers. I definitely want to read more by West. According to Goodreads her most popular book is The Distance Between Us and her highest rated book is P.S. I Like You – which one should I read first?
