A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale

5.0

'When a thing has always been forbidden and must live in darkness and silence, it's hard to know how it might be, if allowed to thrive.'

This touching tale follows the story of Harry Cane, a quiet, shy man who had everything going for him until a secret was revealed that turned his whole world upside down. Fleeing to Canada and its new colonised prairies he meets both friend and foe each leading him to further explore himself and the hidden desires he had thought impossible to act on.

I am a massive fan of LGBT fiction set in the past so as soon as I heard of this novel I knew I had to read it. Now, only a matter of days after I started, I can safely say that the rush to read was completely worth it. Gale treats the discovery of one's sexuality with great respect and tenderness, set in a time where hardly any words yet existed to explain the emotions experienced. This novel took me on a journey from England to Canada with breathtaking detail. The characters were wonderfully developed which made me believe that I too was friends with the Slaymakers. I would thoroughly recommend this novel as I believe it deserves so much recognition.

A mastermpiece. Pure and simple.
