The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd

3.0

I normally love a character-driven novel, but this one fell flat for me. I wanted (and expected from the description) more weaving in of the Jesus story. I wanted to know what it was like being the wife of a man putting himself in grave danger claiming to be the son of God. How did his understanding of God inform hers? Instead, it read as a story of a woman of the time who wanted to be a writer. That could have been more satisfying if the novel explored why she was driven to write and what she wrote. The marriage to Jesus was so tangential it barely affected the story and, at the same time, distracted from it.
