I'll admit, the first time I had interacted with Howl's Moving Castle was the film. In comparison to it, the characters are slightly different. In this, Howl himself is a little more off-putting and particular about his possessions. Outside of that, it's very much an expansion of what's in the movie. The cast of characters is also much broader as more of Sophie's family members are included.
I will say however, some of the language used in the book (such as invalid, queer - in regards to the emotion etc) has not aged particularly well. This is unfortunately to be expected.
This was one of the first times I've ever properly listened to an audiobook, and as such my memory of this book may be spotty in some places due to me spacing out. I think if I just read the book, my perception would probably be different.
