An enjoyable read but the writing style reminded me of a high school English text with the way it spelled out what was happening. At one point the author literally pointed out that something could be seen as “a metaphor for life in Vietnam.”
That said, I still teared up at certain points. 
I wouldn’t rule out reading more by this author but I won’t rush to do so.
