Gentlemen of the Road by Michael Chabon
4.0

This book is really what I had kinda hoped the second half of Don Quixote would be, a tale of swashbucklers with twists and turns, funny and sad moments. I'm a big fan of Michael Chabon, adoring his ability to weave tales that seem completely true (Kavelier and Clay) while still being imaginative. This story is set around the Khazars, a group of people who, for reasons people have never quite discovered, converted to Judaism like 1100 years ago, focusing on a Jew and African who travel around stealing and rescuing as the situation requires. They end up on a mission to save the prince of Khazar, which takes them around central asia and introduces a host of different groups of people, all running a scam or looking for booty (literally and figuratively).
I thought this story was great. The chapters tended to be short little episodes and told the story in a way that made me want to keep turning the pages. And at 200 pages, I never felt that anything was fluff.
Anyone who is a fan of Chabon or Quixote should pick this up, you won't be disappointed!
