dark informative slow-paced

An informative and interesting account of the case of Dora and Claire Williamson, who signed themselves over to the “care” of Linda Burfield Hazzard, a quack doctor who proceeded to starve them and steal from them. It’s written in a narrative style which is easy to read and helps you get a feel for the people involved in the case, as well as the time period and the place where this all occurred. I did find some parts were repetitive and a little boring to read, in particular the chapters immediately prior to the beginning of the trial; it’s a lot of back and forth correspondence between different consulates and people involved in the court system. It’s quite dry and could have been cut down or summarised without losing any clarity. Overall still an interesting and clearly well-researched book.
