A horror novel for the incredibly faint of heart. This book was more of a thriller at the end of the day, and not my favorite thriller at that. A book told in flashbacks and then in the "present" day of the year 2000, we follow two sisters who are deeply rooted to an island off the coast of Ohio where women go missing.

First, this book has an entire premise wrapped around "women go missing" and a house full of ghosts but the logical leaps it takes so that the island hasn't already been condemned as a murder island is baffling. It's "local legends", "women get off the ferry and never return." But also it is never really addressed why there are so many missing women and a lack of care.

Second, BB in this book is ridiculous and her motivations are so deeply convoluted to keep you guessing, but it isn't done well. It's all shoe-horned in there. Because we are supposed to stay guessing about her, her entire character suffers.

Third, this book is so long but also nothing happens? Like, I was expecting a lot more from the year 1989 in showing the connection of the characters. But all we got is an overall blanket of 1 weekend on the island an a lot of telling and no showing. Then the 2000 year jumps around so much that 6 weeks pass and we are again told and shown nothing.

Overall, a mid book that had a great beginning, but failed to stick the landing.
