It’s kinda hard for me to write about this book. I generally don’t write review’s but this must be an exception.
It’s important to now that I read this as Hungarian. I knew to history part of it, that wasn’t knew. And I must say it was wonderfully written. I could imagine myself being there in the revolution smiling, crying and fighting together with the characters. And not just this part, every fear and joy was right before my eyes.
As I started this I didn’t exactly know what to expect. The fantasy part mostly caught me by surprise but it was a pleasant one. The colors were and amazing symbol.
When they could see the blue sky through the whole in the flag. Incredible.

The river’s part was also interesting. How it helped Csilla and her family during the war…
I loved the characters. We saw everything through Csilla’s eyes which gave us a unique perspective on others. Her feelings were felt throughout the entire book. We could see how she changed and realized what was truly important for her. But I must say my favorite character was Azriel.
The representation was everything I needed. As a queer person currently living in Hungary and seeing what could have been makes my heart both joyful and sad. The polyamory was truly a miracle I needed so thank you for that.
I find it important to mention that this book is from a Jewish girl’s perspective because it gives so much to the book. The way Csilla loves the city and country despite how it treated her made me think about my life.
A weird personal thought. At first I found it weird to see Hungarian names in an English book but as I was reading it it became clear that language didn’t matter because the message was universal. Sometimes I looked at a word and was like: Wait, this is a Hungarian word! And how then I realized that it’s an English book!
But I hope many people reads this book and maybe someday it makes it’s to the shelves of Hungarian bookstores.
