The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
4.25
adventurous challenging dark tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This book is on the longer side so it will take you on an emotional ROLLERCOASTER. Kuang’s depiction of the inner psyche of someone who has lost everything is chilling and tragic, but feels very real. These characters are complex —children who are forced into a war they’ve inherited. Makes you think a lot about spiritualism, colonialism, war, and genocide, but the story is so compelling you keep reading. Currently on the second book.
