Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth
4.0
This book is good all the way through, but the ending is what makes it all come together. Sloane is such an interesting main character. She isn't a perfect chosen one that was able to move on and find a spouse and have the perfect nuclear family like so many of our favorite chosen ones do in their epilogue. She is traumatized and broken from her time fighting her Dark One. I enjoyed both the plot of this book as well as the characterization of Sloane.
My one critique and the only reason this book didn't get 5 stars is her relationships with Matt and Esther. I liked her relationship with Albert because it felt fleshed out and like an over a decade long relationship. Her relationship with Matt doesn't feel like that. You find out early on that Matt doesn't see Sloane for who she really is despite them being a couple for 10 years and knowing each other for longer. Both Matt and Esther also always seem to think the worst of Sloane while they are supposed to be such a tight knit group of friends. I like the characterizations of each when they stand alone, but the characterization of their relationships feel off to me.
