Finally finished this, wasn’t able to when I tried picking it up over a year ago. I remember now why I had a hard time finishing it.

Marina was clearly depressed and suicidal, but she’s talked about like such a burden and weight on Phillip. I know he never intended to marry her or was in love with her, but it’s almost cruel how little care he shows for her, or her memory. His “guilt” doesn’t come up as much as how guilty he is about his kids. I just remember it rubbing me the wrong way last time too. He also basically raped her when she was in a depressive state???

I really love Eloise’s character, and it makes sense to me for her to marry when she was more mature and older. I’m not sold on her and Phillip’s love story, but I enjoyed reading more from her perspective. I’d love to see more interaction between her and her siblings again, because that’s when I feel she really comes alive. I used to think this was one of my favorites, but now, not so much. The story was felt very rushed and the pacing of their love was very quick and strange. It felt like her independence and wit and fire was slowly suffocated and snuffed out throughout the book, because Phillip was essentially looking for a nanny he could fuck, and not a wife with opinions and emotions. I’d like to see how they translate this on screen, and if they can improve his character and this whole mess of a book.
