What a strange and intriguing little novel. At first I had no idea what was going on and was rather put off. Clarke's writing is as excellent as ever, even when channeled into a journal format (though there is a digressiveness to the prose that doesn't make it feel like a true journal would.). But the layers are gradually pealed back until everything is clear and wondrous. I actually think it could have ended a couple chapters sooner, with the decision to leave the Halls instead of where it does. The rest of the book is fine, but I think a somewhat more ambiguous ending might have fit better with the overall nature of the story.
