One of the easiest five stars of my life! If I had the physical copy of this book, I would hold you tonight as I fall asleep (or until I finally get over). Every time I put this book down, I always find myself wanting to reach for it and read more about this family. It was so good! I hope everyone takes a chance and read this book. The length might be daunting but I don't even notice that I have spent so much time reading already!
This book is a generational saga that started with Sunja, a daughter of a crippled fisherman. Her life took a turn when she met the wealthy and older fish broker in the market and start a relationship with him.
The writing is SO beautiful in this book, there weren't much mention of emotions but you feel it right down your bones. I thought that I would get bored since this is historical fiction (and I'm not so much of a fan) but I loved reading about these people. MJL painted this whole scenario for us that it was not that descriptive, had been very immersive.
The characters are real to me. They are flawed and each one distinct from the other. I hold them close to my heart and I was rooting for each and everyone of them. I thought I would be confused the whole way but not at all. You would know this person despite the many names because all of them are MEMORABLE.
Informative. This book thought me more about about East Asia more than I was thought at school. It's educational in the sense that facts were not just thrown at you. You get down with the characters and experience life with them. This is how you remember what really happened during that time of war. This is how you know how people lived when they were forced to flee their homelands. This is how you know how they were able to rise and get back on their feet.
I honestly feel like I've aged a hundred years just by reading this book!

In sum: It was such a joy to read this book and I will never forget about this. This book is beautifully written and informative. If you're not a fan of historical fiction, I suggest that you try this one. It might just be the book for you. I am Asian and yet I don't pick up a lot of Asian written books, but this book gave me confidence to pick them up more. If you're a lover of historical fiction, why haven't you grabbed this one yet?! READ IT. Recommended for those you enjoy generational drama and GETTING EDUCATED.
