I really like this book. Despite the fact that it contains its fair share of misfortune and sadness, it's ultimately an uplifting and hopeful book, full of characters who have genuine goodness. Proulx writes children very well--I especially like Sunshine, who has one of my favorite lines of dialogue in any book ("You're a rotten bitey shit!")--and the understated romance between Quoyle and Wavey is also wonderful.
