The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates
4.0
This was my first exposure to Ta-Nehisi Coates and I listened via audiobook, which he narrates! I found his storytelling very engaging. The book is formatted as a letter to his writing students, and he interweaves quotations throughout. This can be hard to decipher when listening, so I struggled to follow at first.
I enjoyed his section about exploring Senegal, and found the latter discussions about America's Education System and his experience in Palestine very eye-opening as well. Throughout, he emphasizes the power of storytelling and the responsibility of media outlets to provide space for both truth and nuance. I also really admire his ability to take ownership of his contributions as a journalist. I will definitely be reading more on these subjects and also more by this author!
