As with the previous two books in this series, I really did love the book overall. I’m glad we got to see more growth with Diem and although she was stabbed in the end, I think we know she’s going to make it, and make it off the island! It was nice to see Diem’s confidence develop as her skills grew, and it was a bit of a relief to see her relationship with Luther develop in a positive way.
Now, I have a bit of a rant against Auralie, who I have major issues with. And a bit of a rant against Diem, but I do still love her!I just think that she makes headstrong, idiotic choices that undermine her daughter, who Auralie should have been able to figure out is powerful. For me, I don’t know if she’s redeemable. On that note, Diem also made some very frustrating choices. When Luther tells her how low his power is, Diem insists that they’re going to get Teller so that he can be reunited with their mother. Then she risks herself, Luther, and her loyal gryvern Sorae (and her mother, who I have no time for so I don’t care) in order to accomplish this absurd task, when Luther clearly had another plan in mind regarding Montios! Sorae got hit with godstone, so it’s just lucky that Cole decided godstone wasn’t going to be fatal for gryverns. I’m all for character development and frustrating choices, as I’ve said on a previous review, but honestly this was too much for me.

Their frosty landing in Montios in Chapter 57 could not have more closely mirrored the way I was feeling towards Diem and especially Auralie.
Having said all of that, I loved getting to go into Umbros and seeing how their society differs from Lumnos. Getting to know Yrselle was great- I love a powerful woman! I liked Doriel but they obviously made some choices that were unacceptable. I want more Taran and Zalaric!
I am very curious to see where Diem’s character arc takes her in the next book. Will she kill her dad, or continue to be (in my opinion) wayyy too unwilling to kill him *just in case* he decides not to be a vengeful destructive monster. I also hope he doesn’t make that big of a change, as I feel like that would be a little too convenient.
Anyway, I am very much looking forward to the release of the next book!!
