John Winchester's Journal
by Alex Irvine
John Winchester's Journal can be for some an intro for those who want to dive into the world of Supernatural. It contains occurrences of hunts, everything John learns along the way and the torment of losing his wife and raising his sons alone, in the hunter way. Driven by the desire for vengeance, to find out who or maybe what killed his wife, John unwillingly pulls Sam and Dean into the family business: monster hunting. As you read along with John's writing you can learn at the same time with him about supernatural creatures, their origin and how to get rid of them. At the same time, you are confronted with the sad reality that this is a man forever tortured by the memory of his dead wife. Everything he does, he does for her. He swore to not rest until he finds the "sonofabitch" that pinned her to the ceiling and set her on fire.
Each year feels counted by four events: Dean's birthday, Sam's birthday, their wedding anniversary and her death anniversary. These four numbers are constantly repeated and it does feel like time is passing by as you read, as years decay over John and he feels like he is nowhere near finding who killed Mary and why, although he does not really care why. He just wants to find the demon that killed her. And kill it in the process. (Let's be real now, if some supernatural being had been after MY family, I would probably shit my pants, but really tell them and train to defend everyone). It just, it feels like Dean is the only one prepared by his father for this. It seems in the book, that John never really told Sam that DEMONS FROM HELL ARE AFTER THEIR BUTTS which most likely causes the rift between them.
The book gets hard to read when latin gets involved. There are some passages written in latin, as a way to show how John kept all the incantations close at hand. I tried to read the latin prayers and incantations, but I gave up.
Overall, John's journal is a great first book to start your journey in the world of Supernatural. This book definitely put me in the correct mood to watch Supernatural again and for some reason my mind wanted to remind me that Jeffrey Dean Morgan also plays Negan in The walking dead and that we should watch that as well again. The mind is weird, especially when we are discussing old fandoms.
