I did this as a part of the tandem read. Partially physical book, mostly audiobook. Please read the whole review cause I have thoughts.

My feelings on Chaol Westfall: I think he gets a lot of hate online from people. Can he be annoying? Yes. Can he be rude? Yes. However, throughout the ENTIRE series, he is consistently doing his best to make the best decision and protect Dorian. The thing with Nehemia is 1. He thought he was protecting everyone and made a bad call. He hates himself for it every day since then. He was torn between these girls and a very deadly king as a 19 year old. 2. We know that Nehemia had laid the ground work for that killing. It would’ve happened one way or another. Throughout this book, there were many times when I was annoyed that he blamed Aelin for his own choices. But when being healed by Yrene, there was the realization (finally) he was taking out the anger at himself on Aelin. The anger he felt about Dorian and the demon, his men, Nehemia, etc. was aimed at Aelin which is a very human move. But this book showed a TON of character development for the guy. He has a new perspective on his life, his body, and what he’s meant to do. I LOVED Yrene. She could call out Chaol. She also had a large character development: caring for those from Adarlan, standing up for herself to the royals, and owning her past. I’m very excited for her to meet “her stranger” who gave her the note.

I would recommend this to be a tandem read with Empire of Storms. Not because it is a bad book or hard to get through, but because of the place you leave off in Empire of Storms, I can imagine it is very difficult to go back in time and care about this other continent. It is a book that NEEDS to be read in the series because incredibly important information regarding the war and strategy is conveyed to us. If you’re still reeling from EoS, it can be hard to get through and focus on ToD. Good book. Lord help me and my heart on Kingdom of Ash.
