Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

5.0

This is an unbelievable story that was immaculately reported. It’s deeply upsetting to think about media cover ups of sexual misconduct (orchestrated by powerful male executives/media moguls/politicians) and whom the cover ups affect (women, their jobs, their families, their privacy, their mental health, their sanity). These men ingratiated themselves with, and were complicit in, the sexual harassment (re: rape, groping, verbal abuse, unsolicited bodily exposure) of women and the proceeding NDAs that silenced them for decades.

NBCUniversal worked tirelessly to kill a Harvey Weinstein piece exposing him of sexual misconduct— which they initially green lit—reported by Ronan Farrow. Then, they got nervous about the exposé, and told Farrow to take it elsewhere. So he does, to The New Yorker, where he is met with allies in management, editing, lawyers, and meticulous fact checking.

This book has it all: Harvey Weinstein, Hilary Clinton, Trump, Charlie Rose, Matt Lauer, Rose McGowen, Meredith Vierra, Mina Sorvino, Tom Brokaw, Rachel Maddow, Andrew Cuomo. Death threats and an Israeli espionage firm. But, most importantly, the courage of the women to tell their stories- whose lives were ruined as a result of being violated, and who were ultimately silenced until now. An absolute must-read.
