This was an effortlessly cool short story collection about female desire and relationships. Elle Nash is truly becoming the queen of the underground and I’m so excited to read more from her after finishing this.
The writing in these stories was excellent - I usually find with short story collections I can find them hard to settle in to but her writing really grabs you by the throat and demands your attention. And she writes so unapologetically about feminine rage and lust.
My favourite story was the one which spoke about bulimia and eating disorders. I’ve never really seen it talked about in the way Nash talked about it in this story and it just completely blew me away. There is a sort of Gen X feel to her stories but they are also riffing off the trend of messy women at the moment and I love how her writing is really paring the two together. It’s got a deep sense of hopelessness vs excess which I find really interesting.
Can’t wait for Gag Reflex to come out later this year and going to be reading Animals Eat Each Other as soon as I can.
