The Last Book Party by Karen Dukess

3.0

Kind of a light book about a young publishing assistant who takes the summer off to work for a notable author. Romantic entanglements ensue, betrayals become apparent, and blow up during the book party hosted by the author and his poet wife.

We read this for my book club, but I don't recall us having an in-depth conversation about this one. I worked for a publishing company in the 1990s, but it was textbooks, and believe me, we didn't attend any glamorous parties. I did go to a few bar hops with people. Everyone was around the same age and demographic, so I suppose romantic entanglements could ensue but never did.

Another reviewer stated that they felt like they read a book similar to this. I somewhat agree, but I like the simple yet descriptive way the author wrote. The landscape is incredibly vivid, and the characterizations and scenarios work, too. Not a ton to say about the book, but it's a quick read. I'd be interested to read a future novel to see if I could find more to say about Dukess's writing.
