The Voyeurs by Gabrielle Bell
4.0

This graphic novel felt very "real." It was something I kept thinking over and over again. But what does that mean?

For Bell, it means awkward, interior, and sad. Bell is pretty depressed a lot of that time, and this book is less of an adventure, and more of her just trying to cope. But it's not overt depression, it's more of just a subdued kind of depressed-difficulty getting up, getting worn down by social situations, the occasional bout of tears.

My favorite parts of this book are the really short, self-contained vignettes that are more prevalent at the beginning. They pack a really intense punch. Bell lets you look into her head, and then she lets you watch her interact with others. It makes you feel as if you're seeing a really complete version of what happened. As personal as a diary, but not removed from others like a diary.

I was started to get tired of the formula, and tired of seeing similar things by the end. But for the final act, Bell switches it up. She does these longer sections that tie back into some of the feelings she's explored in the smaller stories. They're more abstract, and it felt so good, satisfying, and right at the end.
