House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess

Note that I bought and now own this book.
6/10, well where do I begin with this and this was the first book I've read from Jessica Cluess but she disappointed me with this book but her other ones might be good. The introduction of the story was slow when it didn't need to as the five different POVs didn't work here since they were all together at the same time in the same place so it felt redundant and should've been cut out. Suddenly the Emperor of Etrusia dies and by the way the empire looks like it took over the entirety of what looks like Europe and the five characters Lucian, Ajax, Hyperia, Vespir and Emilia fight to get the throne but the stakes were low as they were allowed to fight but not allowed to kill each other for whatever reason and there were four challenges set for them which were like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins but way less entertaining and I only remember two challenges like fighting a basilisk and dragon racing and the other two I forgot. Once they were done with the challenges but everyone survived so how are they supposed to decide who would be emperor, maybe decide on who won the most challenges or who won the challenges in the fastest time but the author didn't think about that and instead made Hyperia betray all the other characters and I got a big epic battle in the end where she was defeated but she escapes and now there were two emperors and two empresses jointly ruling over all of Etrusia which was quite confusing and a strange ending also and apparently there's a second book in the duology but it probably would never come out because the author's publisher dropped her due to reasons... If you like high fantasy books this is for you but there are better ones out there like The Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska which is somewhat similar to this.
