I'll be honest, this was painful for me to finish. Although the writing was good and I found the world building intriguing, I simply could not get over how tragic this storyline was. Every character repeatedly makes terrible choices. I kept waiting for a single happy thing to happen to literally anyone in this book, and instead it only got worse at every turn. Everytime I thought a character had hit rock bottom and must finally begin the climb back up, something more shocking and deeply depressing happens to them. It was so bad it almost became comical. And on top of that, I don't think I liked any of the characters anyway.
If you enjoy books with incredibly tragic characters who spiral into misery for the entirety of an extremely slow and dense fantasy world, then this might be for you. I love pirates and dragons, but wow did this book flop for me. If I wanted to be this miserable I'd read the news instead.
