I loved the first one but I loved THIS ONE even more! The narrator Gary killed it with the voices once again. I think this one moved a lot quicker than the first one, and while I don't think the characters motivations/dispositions changed too much throughout the story, this didn't bother me too much by the end. Enough things did change: so much more of the backstory and history of the world opens up (and answers questions I had from the first book), there's another twist I didn't see coming, and it was very fun to watch the characters dance around each other, even though Oren had already somehow kinda-sorta promised himself to Izra without even knowing. 😂

The women were more important and featured in this one than the first one, and I much preferred the ensemble cast compared to the first book. Everything feels stronger and more fleshed out. Speaking of flesh I could have used more explicit scenes 🤭 but the moments they have are extremely good! Also I really like that the conflicts the main characters face aren't centered around homophobia. It's refreshing to read a book esp in a fantasy/medieval-style world that doesn't make homophobia a touchstone. I am sooo looking forward to when I can get my hands on the audiobook of the third one! Thank u Seth Haddon for bringing me such joy, I am very grateful 🙇‍♀️🩷
