The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
4.0

A slow starter, but really quite good by the end. If not for pacing issues and some dryness early on, this would have been a 5 star rating.

This author loves courtly protocol and ritual with a serious passion. It permeates every facet of the plot and every action in the book. It's beautiful once you can get your head inside the obtuseness of it.

The world building is solid, although we don't move to a scale where it matters until relatively late in the book.

The characters are subtle but deep and well written. they grow and change and develop both on screen and off. The main character is a relatable figure, a good person, and a feminist.

Check this out, but don't try to read it around other distractions. This one is a bit dense and cerebral, but worth it.
