Emily of New Moon
by L.M. Montgomery
4.0 - As most of you know, I’m a huge Anne of Green Gables fan, so naturally I thought I’d try Emily of New moon out after a friend’s suggestion. I honestly liked it more than I thought I would. Although very similar to Anne, Emily brings her own personality to the table which gives the story a different tone. Emily is stubborn and strong-willed like Anne but comes off as less dramatic and more composed. Nevertheless, there are countless parallels that can be drawn between the two worlds of Anne and Emily. They’re both orphans adopted into the home of women who appear to be hard on the outside but soon grow to love them dearly. They both get into silly adventures, are extraordinarily creative, and love to read and write stories.
The only part of this book that I didn’t quite like was the part where she met Dean Priest. He says that he’ll “wait for her” which I interpreted as waiting until she’s old enough to marry. The creepy part is that he’s 36 and she’s 10 or 12 when they meet. He grew up with her father! Not the ideal situation.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book!
